Selecting a marketplace changes its name only. Enter the fees that apply to your product category, programme and seller account.

04 / Returns and advertising

Only the selected return and advertising method is used. The other inputs are ignored to prevent double-counting.

05 / Settlement adjustments (optional)

TCS/TDS reduce the estimated immediate marketplace payout, not contribution profit. Ask your accountant how to treat them for your business.

Enter a selling price and your actual channel costs to see the side-by-side comparison.

THE THINKING BEHIND THE NUMBER

How to use this calculator

Compare selling-channel economics with the same product price and costs. Marketplace fee structures differ by category and programme, so enter your actual seller fees rather than relying on universal rates.

THE METHOD

Contribution = net selling revenue − COGS − packaging − channel fees − logistics − advertising − expected returns − other costs. Monthly contribution = contribution/order × orders − monthly fixed costs.

A practical example

Compare the same product selling price on your Shopify store and one marketplace. Add your actual seller fees, fulfilment, acquisition and return costs for each channel. Switch between per-order and monthly contribution without assuming one channel always wins.

How to read your result

This comparison is an estimate, not a channel recommendation. Tax withholding affects settlement cash flow but is not automatically treated as a permanent profit expense.

Use the result alongside your store analytics, product costs and operating context. If the inputs are estimates, treat the output as an estimate too. Change one input at a time to understand what drives the result.

Marketplace vs Shopify: what's the real cost difference?

Comparing only a marketplace commission with a Shopify subscription misses acquisition, fulfilment, payment fees, advertising, returns and app costs. This calculator starts with a shared product price and cost, then shows channel-specific contribution per successful order and per month.

Shopify store cost structure

A Shopify order may carry gateway and transaction charges, shipping, COD costs, software allocation, advertising CAC and expected returns. Monthly plan and fixed costs are shown separately and allocated per order only when you provide a monthly Shopify order count.

Marketplace cost structure

Marketplace sellers may pay referral or commission fees, closing and collection charges, fulfilment, storage, programme fees, advertising and returns. Actual amounts depend on category, price, fulfilment model and seller programme. Enter your current seller-account fees rather than assuming one platform-wide rate.

Amazon vs Shopify profit

Amazon India may provide discovery and fulfilment options while the merchant's own store offers a direct customer relationship. Neither channel's economics can be inferred from commission versus subscription alone; include acquisition, return and logistics costs for both.

Flipkart vs Shopify profit

For Flipkart, use your applicable referral, fixed, collection and fulfilment charges along with product, marketing and return costs. Shopify costs depend on your gateway, traffic acquisition and operational setup. Compare contribution using your own statements.

Meesho vs Shopify profit

For Meesho, enter the fee structure that applies to your account and order mix, including shipping, returns and promotional costs. Do not assume a universal commission policy. The same product economics should be applied to the Shopify scenario.

CLEAR ANSWERS

Marketplace vs Shopify Profit Calculator FAQs

Is selling on Shopify cheaper than Amazon?+

It depends on your actual commission, advertising, fulfilment, return and customer acquisition costs. Enter both channels' costs to compare estimated contribution; the calculator does not recommend a winner.

How do I calculate marketplace profit?+

Start with selling price minus seller-funded discount. Subtract product and packaging cost, marketplace fees, shipping, advertising, expected returns and other variable costs.

Are Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho fees automatically updated?+

No. Fees vary by seller, category and programme and can change. Enter current fees from your seller account or official documentation.

Should I include advertising costs?+

Yes, if ads help acquire the orders being compared. Enter a per-order cost or calculate it from spend and attributable orders; the calculator uses one method at a time.

How should I account for returns?+

Use either an expected loss per placed order or a return rate multiplied by loss per incident. Do not use both; recoverable stock should not be counted as a full loss.

Do TCS and TDS reduce contribution profit?+

Not automatically. The tool displays them as immediate settlement deductions because tax withholding can affect cash payout differently from accounting profit. Confirm your treatment with an accountant.

Can I compare Flipkart, Meesho or another marketplace with Shopify?+

Yes. Select Flipkart or Meesho, or name a custom marketplace. The selector does not insert unverified fees; every cost remains editable.

What if I have no monthly orders yet?+

You can still compare variable per-order contribution. Monthly Shopify fixed costs remain visible in the monthly scenario, and the tool avoids dividing them by zero orders.
